Graduate Admissions
Completed applications should be submitted online to the Graduate Office before the January 1 deadline, for entrance the following September. Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications as early as possible. Applications will not be reviewed until all credentials and official copies of test scores have been received. It is strongly recommended that applicants take the GRE in October of the preceding year, which leaves enough time for Caltech to receive the scores by January.

Successful candidates often have in common:

  • a grade point average in the top 5% of their undergraduate class, strong letters of recommendation
  • a passion for research as demonstrated by active participation in undergraduate research
  • GRE scores in the 90th percentile or above

It is strongly recommended (but not required) that candidates take a subject GRE test that is relevant to their intended course of graduate studies.

Please visit the Graduate Admissions website for downloadable forms, important dates, and complete information about the graduate admissions process.

Students with an interest in medical research may wish to consider the joint MD/PhD programs with UCLA and USC, which award a PhD from Caltech and an MD from either UCLA or USC.
